Local company, A&E Fire & Security recently welcomed the third member of the Deveson brothers, former students of Millbrook Academy, to their team.

Chay (17) has just completed the obligatory probationary period, becoming a permanent team member and completing the trio – but how did it all start?

Aaron Deveson (21), the eldest of the brothers started working for the company in November 2013. “I studied Mechanical Engineering at College and achieved a Distinction in Engineering and worked in the industry for a couple of years after completing my diploma. I’d seen A&E’s vans driving around and then saw an ad in the paper for a Trainee Service Engineer. It appealed to me as it looked a bit different and I wanted to improve my electrical knowledge.”

He continued “I was really enjoying my time here and was impressed by the amount of investment in training I was receiving, so when the next Trainee Service Engineer position arose, I encouraged my brother, Callum, to apply.”

Callum (19) was just finishing his last couple of weeks at college and after having heard all the positive things Aaron had been saying about his work, he felt it was great timing and a great opportunity for him.

“Aaron had been working for A&E Fire & Security for about a year and a half and so I’d seen how well he was getting on there. From what he was telling me, it sounded like it was a really friendly company to work for, lots of variety and the timing for me was pretty perfect.”

Chay (17), is the latest addition to the A&E Fire & Security team and completes the trio. Chay finished secondary school in July last year and was beginning a Motor Vehicle diploma at college when another vacancy became available. Seeing how much his brothers were enjoying it there and hearing about the level of training they were receiving, he felt it was too good of an opportunity to miss.

“Aaron had been with the company for two and a half years and Callum for almost a year. They both clearly loved working there and I’d seen how much training they’d been getting. I got the impression it was the kind of a place you could have a career for life if you wanted to, so when I heard they had another trainee position, I felt it would be a great opportunity for me.”

Competition for these positions is fierce with over 100 applicants vying for the positions, but both Callum and Chay stood out from the crowd in terms of their motivation and enthusiasm and had clearly done their research into the industry before coming to interview.

“Both lads were chosen on their own individual merits and really stood out from the rest of the candidates, but you can tell they’re all brothers as they share a likeness in their attitude to work and training,” said Operations Manager, Marcus Diggines who interviewed both Callum and Chay.

Ed Stallard, A&E Fire & Security’s Managing Director and Grantee added “the company started out as a family-run business over 50 years ago, and whilst I truly value each and every one of my employees, it’s great to have these three lads, three brothers, as part of the team and the special dynamic that they bring.”

A&E have over 60 employees and currently have 13 Trainee Service Engineers. They are keen investors in people and can see the true value in employing and training young and motivated individuals. Ed Stallard said “Employing trainees to us means that we have a happier, more skilled and motivated workforce. We invest in them and we reap the rewards with what they’re willing to give us back in return. It’s win win on both sides. The brothers, former students at Millbrook Academy and Gloucestershire College are a credit to both educational institutions and a real asset to our team here.”
