Chamber Deputy Chief Executive Jon Leamon attended a meeting hosted by Cheltenham Borough Council to discuss the unacceptable condition of pavements and walkways on the town’s high street.
The meeting agreed to lobby Gloucestershire County Council to invest in improvements to the area.
The pedestrianised area near to the Beechwood Arcade is in much need of work. As well as some stretches being uneven, the pavement comprises a patchwork quilt of different surface materials.
Jon says: “There is no doubt that this area is an area which we are keen to make attractive to tourists and shoppers but, at the moment it is not attractive. As we find ourselves competing with efforts to improve the retail areas of nearby Gloucester and Cirencester, we should ensure that this area is resurfaced.”
While it was acknowledged that the area is not unsafe for pedestrians, it was agreed that there was a need to enhance the paved area.
The meeting concluded with the agreement that a strategy would be put together to lobby Gloucestershire County Council, responsible for the roads, expressing concern and calling for resurfacing work to be undertaken as a priority.
