More than 130 Chamber Members and guests attended a Pre–Election Debate at The Mercure Cheltenham Queen’s Hotel on Friday 27th March.

Four of the prospective candidates for Cheltenham were present (The Green Party sent a deputy and The Labour Party were not able to make it). Those who did make it were Martin Horwood MP (Liberal Democrat), Alex Chalk (Conservative), Christina Simmonds (UK Independence) and Richard Lupson Darnell (Independent).

Many searching and topical questions were asked from the floor and it was revealing to hear how each of the candidates responded and tried to put across their policy views, including on defense, foreign affairs, immigration, the local and national economy, the NHS and many others.

At the end of the debate a mock poll was held where all guests were asked to “vote” as if this were polling day. The winner on the night was Alex Chalk. It remains to be seen whether this forecast will be accurate for May!
